How to get better sleep

We’re all sleep deprived, trying to squeeze every last bit of productivity out of our every minute of every day . . . or maybe we just can’t put the iPad down. Now, before I give this bit of medical advice, I’d like to explicitly state that this is not, in any way, medical advice.

  1. Don’t drink alcohol.

Yeah I know, this one is tough, especially during a pandemic. But alcohol disrupts your sleep, and you’re better off leaving it to a once or twice a week dose.

2. Stop eating at least 3 hours before bed.

Yeah I know, this one is tough (wait did I already say that?). Anything that raises your body temperature will make it harder to drift into oblivion. Eating puts your body to work, and you should be relaxed when you’re counting sheep.

3. Turn off the lights.

Sounds simple right? Maybe the reason it’s hard to sleep sometimes is because of all of the damn light that’s artificially keeping us awake. I bet if the power grid went down and there was an EMP and all my iDevices shutoff, I would suddenly notice that I’m very sleepy after 8pm.

4. Manage your time more effectively.

This is mostly a reminder for myself, but I find that sometimes I lay awake thinking about all of the unfinished projects that I need to work on. But if you know you have your day organized in such a way that you have time to work on these projects, you can rest easy knowing that they are on the schedule and on track to timely completion.

5. Buy an $8000 mattress.

I have a friend whose dad sells furniture for a living, and he always said “You can’t put a price on a good night’s sleep.” Well actually, you can . . . and that price is $8000, or whatever you can afford monthly. But seriously, I slept on a loveseat for a year once, and I’m sure that had nothing to do with my appendix going rancid only 3 months into that year.
